CINEMA INDIA 2002 CONFERENCE

MULTIPLEX: The Economic Viability
a.      Investment & Revenues
b.     Taxation policies for multiplexes & theatres: Government’s support or
   strangulation of cinema exhibition industry.
September 27 2002, Friday 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM

This session investigates into the idiosyncrasies of the Indian cinema economy, to learn if there are hidden problems that will affect the multiplex survival. Burdened with an immature film distribution set-up which is fragemented & regionalized in the hands of distributors lacking financial depth & long-term sustenance.

Other problems include ticket prices, failure of Indian cinema content, lack of purchasing power with the cinegoer to exploit the value added services at a multiplex. High cost of utilities and many other issues in the Indian context that creates a serious doubt on the viability of the multiplex.

In 2001 the multiplex conference discussed the regulatory framework & setting-up a multiplex.

This session builds on the multiplex conference in 2001 & creates a platform for serious and in-depth discussion on the multiplex industry in 2003 with a expanded programme.

DVD: Threat or Potential to the Cinema Exhibition Industry
September 27 2002, Friday 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM

This session will discuss the emergence and proliferation of the DVD Video format and how it will affect the box office collections.
The DVD e-cinema potential with video projectors catering to the low end of the cinema exhibition market could affect the potential of old fashioned theatre still struggling with the carbon arc lamp celluloid projectors. The DVD factor is emerging realistically enough to make this session a truly interesting one.
A major question is that the DVD parlour like the video parlour may escape from all responsibilities, take away the audience & seriously impair the legitimate cinema exhibition industry.
